The three commonly recognized procurement categories are direct procurement, indirect procurement, and services procurement. Direct procurement covers goods used to create a product or deliver a core offering. Indirect procurement includes operational purchases such as technology, facilities, and office needs. Services procurement covers contracted expertise or labor, including consulting, construction, and professional services. Public-sector procurements may use any of these categories under formal government rules.
